Can A ‘Tosser’ be Insta savvy? (Asking for a friend)

By Tiare Snow

I sat with a spectacular social media guru today and everything she said had me doing the “mind blown” expression, you know the one? Where you use your hands to express that your brains are exploding all over the library (in this instance) due to the information that you are receiving. Yep, that one.

All this time I had no idea that I was using instagram the way a baby drives a car; very very badly, maybe even illegally (who knows). It all seemed relatively easy while I was sitting with the guru, but now I’m alone, going through my notes, trying to figure out how to best “sell myself” in my Insta bio, under 150 characters, and all I have come up with is this:

‘Tiare is a tosser who really wants to publish and sell her book without actually saying the words ‘I’m a writer’ (spew), and she has written a book (anyone can do that), and could you please buy it so she can afford to hire a cleaner to mop up the blood, sweat, and tears she endured to write the bloody thing”.

Instagram has politely advised I am wellover word limit. I can manage to fit in ‘tosser’, but can’t quite get in thepart where I beg people to buy my book. (Book? Oops, that’s hush hush).

I’ve been learning about hashtags and highlights and honestly I am just looking at my instagram page like it’s a really bad poem, and I just want to scrunch it all up and throw it away. Kudos to the guru though, because if I did scrunch it all up, I’ve got all the tips and tricks to build it back up better than before.

This post started because I wanted people like me (legends, of course) to know that I too have no idea what I’m doing (P.S not just in the tech space).

However, I feel like I want to give a shout out to those that are nailing it (you know who you are), and those that are giving it a red hot go (I know who I am).

I write a lot about being “all the things” but turns out there are somethings (maybe many) that I not yet am; such as a social media guru. What I have learned so far, is that marketing oneself (no matter how small or large the ego) can be really difficult, and make you feel like a bit of a tosser.

I highly recommend sourcing gurus for things such as social media, babies that won’t sleep through the night, and learning to wake up without hitting the snooze button.

Has a guru helped you lately?

  1. Can you send me the details of this “guru” of insta. I need! I completely know what you mean. Selling yourself completely makes you feel like a tosser. Just know that you ARE in fact as awesome as she is going to make you sound xxx
