Promise

Gold watches reminded her of broken promises. The shine was suggestive, enticing, gleaming at her desire just as promises did. The gold represented the treasure that was to be his promise to her. She was just a girl, still young enough to have her affection swapped for trinkets. She waited. Not for birthdays or Christmas, but just for the arrival of his promise in a parcel. She aged while waiting by the post box. So she bought her own gold watch to replace the heart on her sleeve. She could no longer be bought.
